OUR STORY
Humanity Hale began in 2019 as a puʻuhonua — a refuge created for the youth of Hawaiʻi Island who were navigating trauma, instability, and the loss of safe spaces. A refuge like this had never existed here, and in truth, we created what we needed when we were children growing up on this island.
What started as a small, love-driven effort by community mentors has now grown into a healing movement supported by cultural practitioners, therapists, social workers, and dedicated volunteers who all share one belief: every child deserves a place to feel safe, supported, and to belong.
Our roots are grounded in culture. Kūpuna guide our work, ensuring that Hawaiian values, stories, practices, and ʻāina-based learning remain at the heart of everything we do. Through moʻolelo, mālama ʻāina, cultural arts, and honest emotional expression, youth and elders reconnect — restoring identity, pride, and a deep sense of place.
Humanity Hale was built with heart, culture, and community at its foundation.
And woven into its every layer is one unwavering promise:
no child should ever have to heal alone.

Why Our Work Matters
Across Hawaiʻi Island, countless youth are carrying unseen burdens — trauma from unstable homes, disrupted attachments, abuse, neglect, and the deep impact of generational hardship. Many experience constant movement through the foster care system. Many are returned to unsafe environments. Many age out with nowhere to go.
Our island has some of the highest rates of Native Hawaiian foster youth in the state, yet the resources available to support them — especially culturally grounded therapeutic care — are limited.
Humanity Hale was created to change that reality.
Our programs fill critical gaps by offering youth:
• trauma-informed support
• cultural grounding and identity healing
• ʻāina connection
• stable mentorship
• emotional tools
• and a community that refuses to give up on them
When systems fall short, community becomes the solution.
And that’s where Humanity Hale stands — in the gap, with love through action.
our focus
Humanity Hale serves foster and at-promise youth ages 8 and up across Hawaiʻi Island, with most of our youth coming from North and South Kona. Many are currently in foster care, have been removed from unsafe homes, or are transitioning out of the system with limited support.
Too many of these young people spend their childhoods shifting from one placement to another. Too many enter adulthood without stability, cultural connection, or guidance. And too many Native Hawaiian youth face the risk of chronic homelessness after aging out.
Our focus is simple and urgent:
to provide the consistent care, cultural grounding, and trauma-informed support these children and youth have been denied for far too long.
We meet them where they are — in schools, in crisis, and in community — and walk beside them as they rebuild safety, identity, and hope.
Measuring Healing & Growth
To ensure our programs are truly supporting youth healing and development, Humanity Hale uses a structured, culturally informed evaluation process.
We administer pre- and post-assessments at Weeks 1 and 10, facilitated by our trained mentors. These assessments were co-designed with licensed clinical therapists, cultural practitioners, and professionals in trauma-informed care to ensure they accurately reflect emotional, cultural, and behavioral growth.
Our evaluations measure key indicators such as:
-
Emotional regulation & coping skills
-
Sense of identity & cultural connection
-
Personal safety & well-being
-
Confidence, resilience & self-esteem
-
Connection to ʻāina, culture, and community
-
Peer relationships & mentor trust
-
Overall sense of belonging
All assessment data is tracked within our internal data-tracking system and reviewed regularly by mentors, leadership, and program staff. These insights guide ongoing program improvements, ensure cultural and trauma-informed alignment, and help us respond to the emerging needs of our youth.
By combining clinical guidance, cultural wisdom, and real-time feedback from youth, we ensure that our programs consistently foster healing, growth, and long-term well-being.
